Although the pace is slow at the beginning and despite the cultural differences that can make Asian films seem weird to westerners, the film soon becomes really engaging. Also, it takes just the first few minutes to realize the excellent photography and acting. In 1997, in a crime-ridden world, Manhattan island has been turned into a maximum security prison. The most dangerous criminals are put there for life, behind a large wall that cuts them off from the rest of the world, in a prison governed by gangs. In order to go into Manhattan and bring back the President alive, an anti-hero -criminal and former war hero Snake Plissken, played by Kurt Russell – is brought in as the only hope. n 2021, in a distopyan world of misery dominated by megacorporations, half of the people suffer from the deadly nerve attenuation syndrome (NAS). Johnny, a mnemonic data courier who now can’t even remember his own past, is hired to deliver crucial information whose origin is a mystery. With his memory way overloaded and no clue about the data he’s carrying, Johnny must have the information downloaded within 24 hours to escape a certain death. But data overload isn’t his only problem; the Yakuza, the most notable crime syndicate, and a preacher turned hitman loaded with implants are after him, hired to retrieve the data intact by cutting his head off. I last watched this film a few years ago, enough for my bad memory to forget major plot twists and enjoy as if it was the first time -yes, there are many advantages to being forgetful. This film is pretty well known among a certain public for its dystopian and cyberpunk themes, as its main character is a sort of street hustler who deals in squid recordings -short clips recorded directly from the cerebral cortex that enable full sensory reproduction when played back. Also, it’s set in a volatile 1999 Los Angeles, where civil unrest and police brutality are commonplace.
